BioSand Filters, Simple yet Effective and Life Saving Technology
May 10, 2011 | Hargeisa, Somaliland
Biofit
Aid Organization, an EDC/Shaqodoon implementing partner based in
Puntland, is spearheading the use of sustainable water purification
systems in Somalia in the form of BioSand filters. The
BioSand filter is simple and costs little to assemble and maintain, and
is very effective in removing water born pathogens, producing safe and
drinkable water. In a country like Somalia with high insecurity and poor
infrastructure, the BioSand filter is not only a life saver but an
opportunity to create employment prospects for the Somali youth.
Biofit
developed “BioSand Filter Production and Management” training course,
and is currently training 350 Shaqodoon youth (including a large number
of young women) across Puntland on the preparation, installation and
maintenance of the BioSand filter. At the conclusion of the training
phase, Biofit will provide micro financing for the successful graduates
to start small businesses.
The
BioSand filt
er was developed by Dr. Manz from the University of
Calgary; it’s made of a simple concrete cast filled with specific layers
of sand and gravel. The sand and gravel trap water born bacteria and
other disease causing agents and improves the turbidity of the water
making it crystal clear. Additionally, the concrete cast keeps the water
cool, a major selling point in Somalia’s hot and arid environment.
