Internships more important than ever!

With the economy as is it, many recent graduates are having trouble finding work. Fewer entry-level jobs are available, making it extremely important that jobseekers (shaqodoon) have the competitive edge. Individuals who have participated in internship programs have more experience and are, therefore, more likely to find a job than those who did not intern.

Why should I be an intern?

The number one reason why students should go on internships is that it provides the experience and knowledge about the corporate world that can’t be learned inside the classrooms. It is where students see the theories they learn in school being applied for real challenges. Furthermore, this experience actually enhances or contributes to valuable knowledge in the chosen field of study.

Another reason student should now take internships more seriously is the potential for networking. Many employers who have programs for students use them as a method to recruit new talent. Even if an intern is unable to secure a position at the company they interned at, they may be able to get a letter of recommendation or contacts that will help to find work elsewhere.

Internships also help students improve their skills needed for work—oral and written communication, presentation, leadership, time, and project management skills. Even if the task is simple, interns are challenged to step up to the challenge and polish some of their work habits to prove themselves to their employers.

Since fewer entry-level jobs are to be had, employers are looking to get the most out of the smaller number of workers they hire. Hiring managers tend to see applicants that have been interns as more experienced and feel that these individuals require less training to be brought up to speed. Applicants with internships in their resumes are also more likely to know how to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
