Empowering Somali Youth: Accelerating Socio-Economic Growth and Inclusive Development

We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the 2023 awarding phase of the Accelerated Socio-Economic Empowerment of Youth Project, a remarkable initiative falling under the "Inclusive Local Economic Development" (ILED) program, supported by the European Union, The Government of The Netherlands, UNFPA and Somaliland’s Ministry of Youth and Sports.

At the heart of the project's mission lies a commitment to fostering economic growth by promoting entrepreneurship and innovation among the young people of Somaliland. The project's primary focus on the age group of 15-25 and women, aligns with the ILED's objective of revitalizing and expanding the local economy with an emphasis on broad-based inclusive growth and opportunities for women and youth.

I am extending my congratulations to the young winners of this investment opportunity. I would also like to encourage the other participants who did not secure the investment to persevere and not give up. Lastly, Shaqodoon Organization, UNFPA and other international partners deserve commendation for their great work
— Mohamed Kaahin - Minister of Interior

Throughout the project's duration, young people received comprehensive entrepreneurship training, accompanied by valuable mentorship, ideation, and bootcamp phases. Innovative initiatives and solutions were incubated, and selected young entrepreneurs received vital startup investments to kickstart their ventures.

As a testament to its impact, the project awarded an impressive $107,400 in investments to 41 start-up businesses and 2 social enterprises across five regions in Somaliland. Hargeisa, Gabiley, Borama, Berbera, and Burao witnessed the transformational potential of this initiative, as young entrepreneurs seized the opportunity to bring their creative and innovative ideas to life.

Celebrating the Voice of Poets

Adding an artistic touch to the program this year, the project recognized five talented poets who eloquently addressed pressing societal issues, including Employment, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Peace. By employing the power of creative oral poetry, the competition inspired a sense of social awareness and encouraged young poets to utilize their talents to advocate for positive change within their communities.

Inclusivity: A Cornerstone of Success

One of the winners - a young man living with a disability from Gabiley said the investment he has received will not only enable him to start his own business but also afford a university education. His inspiring words underscore the profound impact of the Accelerated Socio-Economic Empowerment of Youth Project in creating life-changing opportunities for all segments of society.

Shaqodoon's programs have always been founded on principles of inclusivity. We aim to serve and empower every member of the community, irrespective of their background or circumstances. This project's emphasis on creating an enabling environment for disabled young people and ensuring a 50% quota for females, exemplifies Shaqodoon's dedication to leveling the playing field for marginalized groups. By breaking down barriers and offering tailored support, Shaqodoon has empowered individuals who might have otherwise been excluded from economic opportunities.

However, this project's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond just financial assistance - it encompasses comprehensive training, mentorship, and support systems that equip participants with the tools they need to thrive in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

The awarding ceremony was graced by esteemed representatives from UN agencies, INGOs, the private sector, and top government officials from various ministries including, the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry for Planning, Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Employment. Their presence and unwavering support reinforced the project's significance in driving socio-economic growth and empowering the younger generation in Somaliland. Notably, Minister of Interior Mohamed Kahiin, UNFPA representative Ahmed Yusuf Mahile, and a representative from Dahabshiil's Microdahab all commended the project's efforts and its impact on the community.

The representative from Microdahab, Hassan Suleiman, affirmed his organization's commitment to the youth, stating, "Microdahab is dedicated to enabling young entrepreneurs to access the necessary funds and investment to drive the growth of their businesses. We are proud to be part of this transformative journey."

The project's lasting legacy of fostering economic growth, empowering youth, and promoting inclusivity continues to reverberate throughout Somaliland. As we set our sights on the future, our commitment remains unwavering to building a brighter, more prosperous, and peaceful nation, driven by the collective efforts and talent of our youth.
