On Wednesday March 18, 2009, Education Development Center, Inc. officially launched the Somalia Youth Livelihood Project (SYLP), also known locally as Shaqodoon (Somali for “jobseekers”). This new 16-month United States government funded program has a goal to provide youth in Somaliland with a greater opportunity to access work, training, internship and self-employment opportunities. Its capacity building work will build on the efforts of local providers while introducing technical innovations using cell phone and the internet to link opportunity providers and seekers.

The SYLP programme has within a very short time built support among the authorities in Somaliland, the business community, both local and international development agencies and the general population of Somaliland. About 40 people participated in the launch ceremony.
