Work in Progress: A Seven-Year Success Story at HargaBits
For the past seven years, a remarkable journey has taken place in the heart of Somaliland. HargaBits, an institution founded in 2016, has become a beacon of digital excellence. It has not only been a school, but also a gateway to a bright future for over 700 aspiring young individuals. The Work in Progress project, funded by Oxfam, has had a profound impact on the institution and its students.
HargaBits offers a diverse array of digital disciplines, from digital design to motion graphics, and front-end to back-end development. Each day, the institution helps its students to achieve their dreams and equips them with the skills necessary to succeed not only locally but also on the global stage.
The culmination of this extraordinary seven-year journey occurred in September 2023, marked by two remarkable events that were separated by only a few days but bound by a shared sense of accomplishment and purpose.
The graduation ceremony for the remarkable Class of 2023 was an unforgettable and vibrant occasion. The ceremony brought together an array of attendees, including the graduating students, their proud parents, supportive friends, the dedicated faculty and staff of HargaBits, Shaqodoon and esteemed guests.
Guled Mohamed Odowa, the manager of the school, extended warm congratulations to the graduates, acknowledging their relentless hard work and dedication. He underscored the school's unwavering commitment to equipping students with both knowledge and technical skills essential for success in the local and global economy.
Nasra Mohamed from the Ministry of Education’s TVET Department celebrated the graduates' triumphant completion of their training and inspired them to chase their dreams. She encouraged them to harness their acquired skills to capitalize on Somaliland's burgeoning tech market and make a meaningful impact.
Two standout students, representing the web development and graphics design groups, took the stage to speak on behalf of their graduating class. They eloquently shared their transformative experiences at HargaBits and the invaluable lessons they had learnt. Additionally, they expressed profound gratitude to their families and trainers for unwavering support throughout their journey.
A Joyous Reunion
Days later, the alumni event celebrated not only the graduates but also the enduring spirit of the Work in Progress program—a spirit that had empowered individuals, shaped careers, and touched lives.
Amidst this gathering of past and present students, faculty, supporters, and partners, the Director General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Abdirashid Aideed Yasin, reaffirmed the government's commitment to youth development. "Education is the cornerstone of progress, and your journey is a testament to the power of education in transforming lives." he stated.
The event resonated with inspiring stories from former students who had graduated from the school. They showcased their successful businesses, testifying to the value of the education they received at HargaBits. Their journeys served as a powerful reminder that education and determination could create opportunities and drive change.
As the curtain fell on these two remarkable events, HargaBits looks ahead to a future filled with promise and potential. It was a story of transformation, collaboration, and the unwavering belief that education could light the path to brighter tomorrows, not just for the individual students but for Somaliland as a whole.
Shaqodoon and HargaBits extend their gratitude to Oxfam for their unwavering support throughout the seven-year Work in Progress journey. Your commitment to education and empowerment has profoundly impacted our students and the future of Somaliland.
