Skills Development and Job Placement for Youth
Challenge
The electrification level of Somalia both in urban and rural areas is very low. The availability and affordability of the renewable energy technology, in particular solar energy, will definitely contribute greatly to the recovery and development efforts in Somalia. The high energy cost is not only problematic for Somali communities, particularly in rural areas, but also contributes to environmental degradation and acts as a constraint to the economy.
Project Goals
Overall goal is to improve employability of the disadvantaged and unemployed youth, including women, in renewable energy sector as well as promoting green technologies for addressing the energy needs in Somalia.
Key Activities
Provision of solar energy technology and business development skills training in Mogadishu, Kismayo and Baidoa for 400 youth
Establish a job placement scheme for 50 youth in 3 selected locations / districts
Impact
We have recruited 400 youth (200:M;200: W) to be trained in solar energy technology and business development skills.
We completed mapping out potential employers. We identified four companies and we have entered MoUs to provide Job placements.
We have conducted orientation to the potential employers in order to enable them to understand the objectives of the project, their role and contributions to the project. The potential employers have been engaged to support the project and align the training needs to the essential sector skills demand.
We have a job placement scheme/ plan based on human resource needs and scope of work of each trainee.
We have signed no MoUs yet with the potential employers to provide job placement opportunities. 50 trainees will be offered job placements and shall receive a daily stipend of US$5. The trainees shall participate in apprenticeship for 126 days. internship to the trained youth, with stipends and/or wages to be paid to the trained youth.
