Burao's Tech Revolution: Youth Driving Development

The Burao hackathon was one of the focal points of the week, where youth, stakeholders, and officials came together to explore how technology could provide sustainable solutions in areas like healthcare and transportation. Over a two-day training session and a main hackathon event, participants collaborated, learned from experts, and created innovative projects that highlighted the transformative potential of technology in their community.

Introduction and Objectives:

The ‘Harnessing Technological Opportunities for Development in Burao’ Tech Hackathon took place from February 15th to 17th, 2024, as part of the broader Somaliland Innovations Cultural Week Summit. It aimed to promote innovation and inclusivity by bringing together stakeholders in the tech ecosystem to devise solutions to pressing challenges, thus showcasing Burao's commitment to technology-driven sustainable development.

The two-day training session preceding the main event was crucial for setting the tone. Thirteen youth leaders, including six women and seven men, underwent training in leadership, social media management, and public speaking. They were prepared to take active roles during the hackathon, fostering confidence and practical skills.

Main Event:

The main hackathon event welcomed over 30 participants, forming three teams to present tech projects across various domains. Among key guests were the governor and the mayor, who emphasized the crucial role of tech in development. The government officials attending the event, including the governor, sheriff, and other esteemed dignitaries, delivered compelling keynote speeches that centered on the theme of "Harnessing Technological Opportunities for Development in Burao." They enthusiastically praised the event's timely occurrence and highlighted its profound significance in promoting innovation, progress, and community empowerment. During their addresses, these officials emphasized the transformative potential of technology in addressing key developmental issues and enhancing the quality of life in Burao. They underscored the importance of embracing digital solutions to drive sustainable growth, improve access to essential services, and stimulate economic prosperity.

Participants tackled challenges in healthcare and transportation through innovative projects like:

  • Foreign Doctor Profile System: Centralized data for improved medical care.

  • Bajaaj Management System: Digitized management of local transportation.

  • Criminal Code Registration System: Streamlined access to legal records.

In the end, the Bajaaj Management System won the competition for its potential to impact local transportation. This innovative project demonstrated exceptional technical execution, addressing a critical transportation challenge with creativity and practicality. The winning team's achievement highlighted the transformative potential of technology in optimizing urban mobility and enhancing public transportation services.
