Innovation in the Water: Berbera's Fishing Industry Takes Center Stage

26th February 2024. The event in Berbera was organized with the primary goal of initiating transformative dialogue among key stakeholders within the local fishery sector. Held at Timacade University in the Sahil region, the session aimed to empower participants to address and overcome current challenges, seize opportunities, and ensure sustainable growth in the fishery industry of Somaliland.

Introduction and objectives:

The event titled ‘Fostering Innovative Fishery: Exploring Existing Challenges and Opportunities’ placed significant emphasis on the development and utilization of fish, recognizing it as one of Somaliland's most important resources. The primary goal of the event was to initiate a transformative dialogue among participants, empowering them to identify and address challenges, seize opportunities, and pave the way for sustainable growth and prosperity. This dynamic gathering served as a platform for stakeholders within the berbera fishery sector to unite and collectively tackle the pressing need for innovation and ingenuity. 

Main event: 

The session kicked off with an inspiring address by the deputy mayor of Berbera, who emphasized the critical role of innovation in sustainable fishing practices. His presence underscored the government's commitment to supporting the sector's growth and sustainability.

Following the deputy mayor, a series of experts and stakeholders from diverse sectors took the stage. Among them was a representative from the private sector who discussed modernizing fishery techniques and integrating technology to enhance productivity and  sustainability. Mustafe, representing the University of Marine Science in Berbera, encouraged the youth to take advantage of the marine resources available in Somaliland. He highlighted the importance of harnessing these resources for economic growth and development. Notably, Mustafe emphasized that his institution is committed to actively participating in job creation initiatives for the young people residing in Berbera.

Other keynote addresses touched on sustainable fishing methods, international market opportunities, and the need for cross-sector collaboration. While the main panel discussion explored the challenges and opportunities in the fishery sector, market access, and value-added services. A representative from a youth-led organization stressed that expanding international markets would be crucial for ensuring competitiveness.

Event outcomes:

The event emphasized the significance of utilizing the marine resources effectively and competitively. By equipping youth with knowledge about modern fishing practices, market trends, and global demand, the event aimed to empower them to leverage the resources in the sea and compete with their peers on a global scale.
