BREACH: Boosting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change

Challenge

The EU BREACH project aims to strengthen disaster risk management, improve access to essential services like healthcare and WASH, and create livelihood opportunities through vocational training and business support. It also focuses on fostering social cohesion by promoting peaceful integration between displaced people and host communities.

Project Goals

The EU BREACH project aims to strengthen disaster risk management, improve access to essential services like healthcare and WASH, and create livelihood opportunities through vocational training and business support. A key aspect of the project is the use of crowdfunding to finance community-led initiatives, empowering local communities and the diaspora to contribute directly to development efforts. The project also focuses on fostering social cohesion by promoting peaceful integration between displaced people and host communities.

Key Activities

  1. Crowdfunding Platform Management: Shaqodoon will establish and manage an online crowdfunding platform (BulshoKaab) linked to the Community Action and Adaptation Plans (CAAPs). This platform will allow the Somali diaspora and other stakeholders to co-finance projects, ensuring sustainable funding for local development initiatives.

  2. Community Engagement and Mobilization: Shaqodoon will work closely with local communities to raise awareness about the project, ensure active participation in disaster risk management efforts, and facilitate the development of CAAPs in partnership with government entities.

  3. Capacity Building: Shaqodoon will provide training and support to community members, particularly youth, in vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. The organization will also lead efforts to establish Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to boost local economic opportunities.

  4. Technology Integration: Through its expertise in tech-driven solutions, Shaqodoon will support the integration of early warning systems and other digital tools to improve disaster preparedness and resilience in target communities.

  5. Training and Capacity Building: Conduct training sessions for disaster committees, and community members to understand, operate, and disseminate early warning information using digital tools and local communication channels.

Expected Impact

The EU BREACH project is expected to significantly enhance the resilience and self-reliance of displacement-affected communities in Burao. By strengthening disaster risk management, the project will help communities better cope with climate shocks and future crises. Improved access to healthcare, housing, and WASH services will contribute to healthier, more stable living conditions for 48,000 direct beneficiaries. Additionally, the focus on vocational training, entrepreneurship, and job creation will provide economic opportunities, helping individuals achieve long-term financial independence.
