RFSS: Riverine & Pastoral Food System Strengthening

Challenge

Riverine communities in Somalia face frequent climate shocks, leading to poor crop yields, limited market access, and increased food insecurity. These challenges are compounded by weak disaster preparedness and economic instability. Without intervention, these communities remain vulnerable to the worsening impacts of climate change. The project aims to enhance the climate resilience of riverine communities in Somalia. It seeks to improve agricultural productivity, expand market access, and strengthen disaster risk management capabilities. Through community-driven initiatives and a focus on sustainable farming, the project supports adaptation to climate change, ensuring food security and economic resilience.

Project Goals

This project aims to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable households by focusing on sustainable agricultural practices, better market integration, and enhanced disaster resilience. The initiative includes developing the MDALAG system, increasing access to agricultural inputs, and providing training on climate-resilient practices.

Key Activities

  1. Development of MDALAG: Implementing a market information system to enhance market access for farmers.

  2. Training of Community Mobilizers: Building capacity among mobilizers to support MDALAG adoption and promote climate-smart agriculture.

  3. Sustainable Farming Initiatives: Promoting the use of improved seeds, soil fertility management, and irrigation techniques.

  4. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Training: Enhancing community capacity for disaster preparedness and response.

  5. Economic Support Programs: Offering vocational training, job creation, and support for small businesses to boost economic resilience.

  6. Crowdfunding Platform: Facilitating diaspora contributions to local initiatives for resilience building.

Expected Impact

  1. Improved agricultural productivity and food security.

  2. Enhanced market access and economic opportunities.

  3. Strengthened community capacity for disaster risk management.
